St. Luke's West End Medical Center Officially Opens

St. Luke's West End Medical Center

Allentown, PA (6/6/2013) – After sitting vacant for many years, the former Pennsylvania Convention and Expo Center located on a 17-acre parcel of land in South Whitehall Township has been redeveloped and revitalized into a new outpatient medical facility that opened in late May. St. Luke's West End Medical Center was officially dedicated today during a grand opening ceremony which focused on the investment into the community and providing easy access to high quality health care."

Pediatric Urgent Care and Sports Medicine will soon Join

"St. Luke's West End Medical Center is an example of what can happen between amazing partners with a shared interest in increasing access to care," said Frank Ford, President, St. Luke's Allentown Campus. "The services that you will find today are just the beginning. I am pleased to announce that this summer St. Christopher's Hospital for Children will join our facility and provide care at the region's first pediatric urgent care center. And, later this summer, St. Luke's will open its first Sports & Human Performance Center in Lehigh County."

When St. Luke's acquired the property in December, 2011, plans were immediately under way to redevelop the 108,000 square foot retail building and 714 space parking lot into a viable, full-service outpatient medical facility.

Work on the first phase of the project began in October, 2012 and was completed in late May, 2013. Exterior work included parking upgrades, landscaping, signing, replacing the roof and resurfacing the façade with stone and brick. Inside, patients will find exceptional health care services in a friendly and easy-to-access environment, said Ford. The full range of services offered includes special and separate facilities for urgent care (“QuickCare”) for both children and adults; an obstetrics/gynecology practice; diagnostic imaging; and laboratory services.

Currently the 108,000 square foot facility houses the following services:

  • St. Luke's QuickCare
  • St. Luke's Occupational Medicine
  • St. Luke's Lab Services
  • St. Luke's Imaging (X-rays and ultrasound)
  • OB/GYN Care Associates

Next Phase of Development

The next phase of development will include a pain management practice and state-of-the-art fitness center and sports and human performance center that is expected to open to the public in late summer/early fall. St. Luke's Sports & Human Performance is designed to enable people of all ages and skill levels to maximize their athletic and fitness potential, according to John Graham, MS, HFS, CSCS*D, RSCC*D, FNSCA, Director of Sports & Human Performance at St. Luke's University Health Network. With the help of college-degreed, certified strength and conditioning specialists, athletes and fitness-minded individuals will experience the thrill of accelerated gains in power, agility, speed and strength, said Graham.

Additionally, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children will be opening the region's first pediatric urgent care center at the site. Slated to open in mid-July, the center will be staffed by board-certified pediatricians and will provide medical care to patients from birth to age 18.

“We are very excited to partner with St. Luke's on their West End Medical Center, and we are looking forward to the opening of the pediatric urgent care center next month,” says Carolyn Jackson, CEO of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. “This will enable us to continue to collaboratively enhance access to high quality pediatric care in the region.”

Investment Reinforces Commitment to Serving Community Needs

Construction contractors included Allied Building Corporation and Bucks Development and Contracting Corporation. St. Luke's is investing nearly $8 million for the project, said Ford, and was funded in part by a grant from the Commonwealth's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP). Lehigh County was instrumental by serving as the administrator of the RACP grant, acknowledged Ford.

Tom Muller, Acting Lehigh County Executive, said, “This very impressive facility and the extraordinary services it will be providing reinforces St. Luke's long-standing commitment to providing for our residents' needs. The County is pleased to have had at least a small role in assisting with the funding.”
