St. Luke's Hospital - Miners Campus Hosts 2013 Black Diamond Garden Party

Coaldale, PA (5/29/2013) – The annual St. Luke's Miners Hospital Black Diamond event is scheduled for Saturday, June 1 from 5 to 9 pm at the Harry Packer & Asa Packer Mansions in historic Jim Thorpe.

“We are pleased to host our annual Black Diamond Garden Party at the Asa and Harry Packer Mansions again this year,” said Bill Moyer, President, St. Luke's Hospital – Miners Campus. “We invite our community to join us as we celebrate and raise funds to establish a Medical Scholarship Fun for future physicians who choose to practice in the St. Luke's Miners community. As potential beneficiaries of the fund, resident doctors and Temple/St. Luke's Medical Students have been invited to spend the weekend in Jim Thorpe to experience the culture and offerings of the community.”

Achievements from Past Black Diamond Events

Bill Moyer, President, continued, “Past Black Diamond events have helped construct a new Heart & Vascular Center and Critical Care Unit, establish a new Day Room for our Nursing Home Residents, develop a Cardiopulmonary Rehab Unit and has helped us move forward with plans for a new Surgical Suite. The event is truly a partnership and celebration with our community.”

Establishment of Medical Scholarship Fund

This year's event will be a business-casual Garden Party featuring food with an international flair, live classical piano and jazz music, tethered hot air balloon rides (weather permitting), and guided tours of the Asa Packer Mansion. Attendees will be able to meet 29 Temple University / St. Luke's medical students will interact with the guests in the “Doctors of History and Future" game. Guests will also interact with volunteers representing local historic doctors. These characters will help guests imagine the role of doctors almost one hundred years ago. The four artists that created a mural to be donated to the medical school will also attend and autograph prints for guests to take home with them. The Garden Party cost $70 per person.

Diane Luicana, Black Diamond Community Chair shares, " We know the medical students will enjoy our area and meeting our community, hopefully they will consider returning here upon graduation."

Proceeds from the 2013 Black Diamond Garden Party will help establish a Medical Scholarship Fund for future physicians who choose to practice in the St. Luke's Miners community. “With the help of the Black Diamond proceeds, St. Luke's Miners Campus will be able to help to train and draw physicians to our area,” said Moyer. “With the focus on bringing specialists to our community, we are so thrilled to be able to help support scholarships for physicians-to-be.”
