St. Luke’s Quakertown Hospital Purchases 30 Acres for Future Growth

Quakertown, PA (1/5/11) – St. Luke’s Hospital & Health Network announced today it has purchased 30 acres of land at the intersection of Route 663 and Portzer Road in Milford Township, approximately a half mile from the intersection of Routes 663 and 309. Under the direction of the St. Luke’s Quakertown Hospital’s Board of Trustees, the hospital began a two-year intense assessment of the hospital’s infrastructure needs, limited possibility for hospital expansion at the current location, as well as continued growth in the region served by the hospital.

Ed Nawrocki, president, St. Luke’s Quakertown Hospital observes, “Through the purchase of this land, St. Luke’s is taking the first step to ensure we can continue to meet the health care needs of our community. We anticipate having a significant presence at the new site in the next 10 years, including the possibility of moving the hospital to this site. While there are no immediate plans to move the hospital, we are committed to working with our community to ensure an appropriate transition should a relocation become necessary.”

According to a recent report from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, St. Luke’s Quakertown Hospital has remained the fastest growing hospital in the seven county region of Philadelphia, suburban Philadelphia and the Lehigh Valley for the second year in a row. The hospital also ranked as the fourth fastest growing hospital in all of Pennsylvania in 2009. This growth has allowed St. Luke’s Quakertown Hospital to remain financially strong when 44% of Pennsylvania’s hospitals reported a negative total margin.

The growth of the hospital and the surrounding community prompted St. Luke’s to build two new outpatient facilities. A total of $17 million was invested in the St. Luke’s Bone & Joint Institute in Quakertown and the St. Luke’s Upper Perkiomen Outpatient Center in 2009.

“A new central location would create convenient and easy access to health care services for residents in the community,” Nawrocki explains. “Since our current hospital location is land-locked on six acres, as the community grows, so does the need for excellent health care. We are simply out of room to grow. The new land at Route 663 and Portzer Road gives us a great and cost-effective option when we need to develop new facilities.”

St. Luke’s Hospital & Health Network purchased the land from LifeQuest, the same organization it purchased Quakertown Community Hospital from in 1995. The original hospital was built in 1930 and through a series of expansions and renovations, St. Luke’s has been able to meet the current health care needs of the community. Since St. Luke’s Hospital and Health Network acquired St. Luke’s Quakertown Hospital in 1995, it has invested over $60 million.
