School Team Physician Services

 St. Luke's Sports Medicine’ team physicians are dedicated to keeping athletes healthy, fit and at the top of their game by focusing on prevention, training and facilitating a rapid, successful recovery in the case of injury. We provide team physician services at practices, training sites, games and competitions, as well as clinical care and surgical treatment.

Services include:St. Luke's Physicians on the sidelines.

  • Working the sidelines of all home games
  • Providing physical exams for many high school athletes
  • Communicating directly with certified athletic trainers at each school
  • Consulting with athletic trainers to get their athletes appointments quickly
  • Consulting with athletic trainers on matters of appropriate diagnosis and care
  • Providing continuing educational programs for athletic trainers

St. Luke's Sports Medicine Physicians on the National Stage

Nike Coach of the Year Clinic

St. Luke’s Sports Medicine physicians spoke recently at the regional Nike Coach of the Year Clinic. Held March 5 – 7 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Breinigsville, this football clinic brought nationally recognized college coaches to the area to speak to and interact with local high school and college coaches. Approximately 300 local coaches attended.

Also speaking at the clinic were three of St. Luke’s orthopaedic surgeons: Nicholas Avallone, MD; Brett Gibson, MD; and Daniel Heckman, MD. All sports medicine specialists, the surgeons presented information on:

  1. ACL Injuries in Football: Prevention and Treatment
  2. Trends in Hip Injury Treatment
  3. Shoulder Injuries in Football: An Update

Parkettes National Gymnastics Training Center

St. Luke's is the official health care provider for the Parkettes National Gymnastics Training Center in Allentown. Parkettes gymnasts  have access to the full range of orthopaedic and sports medicine services available at St. Luke's University Health Network.
