I didn’t think that love would find me again, but it did. And when I married my husband, I became an “insta-mom” to three young children. That’s when it became real for me that I had to take back my life. Since the surgery, I feel fabulous! I no longer have sleep apnea, and my cholesterol and sugar levels are back to normal. I am so thankful that I am now able to take part in family activities and that I will be around to see my young children grow up!

Like many people, I’ve battled with my weight all my life. I always felt like a failure because I couldn’t control this one area of my life. I was aware of weight loss surgery, but wasn’t sure if I was “fat enough.” I suppose I was in denial about just how heavy I had become and how it was impacting my health and my life in general. Now that I’m healthier, I am pursuing all my dreams – like traveling cross-country, staring as an extra and stand-in on television shows and finally wearing the fashion I’ve always admired on other people. I tell people the surgery is like a wedding; life afterwards is like a marriage. Both involve preparation for one big event, but love, mindful attention and patience are what lead to success.

Being overweight runs in my family. I watched my mom struggle with her weight and diabetes, which ultimately claimed her life. I decided that I needed to take control of my health before I became my mom, and my daughter became me. Attending a St. Luke’s info seminar and listening to real patients share their success stories gave me the confidence to know I was in good hands. Immediately after surgery, I started walking a little each day. Now I have completed multiple races and my family spends our weekends hiking, camping and kayaking. We are finally living the life we were meant to live, and I’m not sitting on the sidelines anymore!

Weighing in at more than 400 pounds, with a 66” waistline, I would get home from work and just collapse. My weekends were spent resting, to go back to work. My wife was worried about my health, but she was also scared about the risks of surgery. After we did our research and consulted with the experts at St. Luke’s, we realized that having the surgery would save my life. Before surgery, I took three insulin shots a day and my other medications took up an entire cabinet. Now, I’m medicine free! I now have the energy and ability to do things like travel, help out around the house and go to hockey games and amusement parks. Life is too precious to waste it by feeling tired all the time. Do this for yourself, you won’t regret it!
NOTE: Brian is saying good-bye to his old belt – he has gone from a 66” waistline to 42”.

Growing up, and maxing out at a statuesque 5’0”, there was never anywhere for the extra pounds to hide. To say that I have tried every weight loss program and diet in the book is an understatement. Once I started exploring weight loss surgery and attended the info seminar at St. Luke’s, I was IN. The best way to describe myself post-surgery is that I feel liberated. Liberated from the extra weight and what it was doing to me mentally, physically and emotionally. Liberated from the control food held over me. I am now living my life to its fullest and without the fear and restraint my weight held over me. My best advice is to not be afraid to ask for help – invest in yourself and your future – you will not regret it!
